This essay will explore the themes in Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood, the mental imagery Wordsworth uses, religious overtones in the poem, and an analysis of language. Wordsworth explores many topics in this poem. His favorite, a communion with personality, is a theme that is found throughout. In the outset stanza, he remembers his childhood. When he was young, nature seemed to be this mystical, beautiful thing, and or else the religious experience. There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream, The earth and each roughhewn sight, To me did seem Apparelled in celestial light (1-4) Everything frequent grasses, brooks, things that most people wouldnt take a take care look at, Wordsworth sees as a highly beautiful thing. He sees them as being touched by God (apparelled in celestial light). But, at the end of the stanza, he changes tones, The things which I have seen I now can see no more. All this is gone to him, but why?

The next stanza discusses the existence that nature had more a coming and going simile with him. Its still beautiful, but different. But yet I know, whereer I go, / That in that respect hath past away a glory from the earth (16-17). He feels here that something is missing; whats passed away? Then, in stanza three, he realizes that being sad discredits nature and makes it lesser when he says To me alone came a thought of grief / A timely utterance gave that thought of relief / And formerly more I am strong (22-24).
